PROTEIN POWDER; AND HOW MUCH PROTEIN DO YOU NEED?

When it comes to a healthy diet, eating wholesome foods is always better than meal replacements and artificial ... how do I put it? crap.

A lot of people get caught up in eating 'low fat' and 'fat free' products which sacrifice wholesome healthy fats for fillers, sugars and processed ingredients. Again people focus on cutting carbs and low carb diets, forgetting how vital carbs are for a healthy active lifestyle. But the one macro nutrient that is often looked passed is protein. A lot of women are scared about protein shakes and high protein diets thinking they will bulk up and look manly. This couldn't be more wrong. Ladies - protein is your secret to long lean muscle growth and fat loss.

But like everything in life 'everything in moderation' is they key and this applies to protein and supplements. Your best protein source is obviously real food ie chicken, eggs, dairy and nuts. But for those who live a highly active lifestyle will struggle to meet their protein needs without eating 1kg of chicken each day. This is when a protein powder can be a great choice and addition to a healthy diet.

When it comes to buying your protein powder make sure you follow a few simple rules;

1. look at the ingredient list. Less is more. Make sure you can pronounce everything and look for hidden nasties.

2. You get what you pay for. If it is insanely cheap - there is probably a reason why. Quality over quantity.

The amount of protein you should have in your diet depends on your lifestyle, age, muscle mass, how much exercise you do and what your fitness goals are, but a general rule is between 10 – 35%. It is estimated that you need between 0.8g and 1.7g of protein a day, per kg of body weight. So if you weigh 65kg and are an active individual then you should have around 110gms of protein a day.
